A Not So Nice Google “Feature”

April 4th, 2005 by friskie

If you use a Mozilla or Firefox browser, you need to know that Google uses a “special prefetching feature” that will send a cookie from the site behind the top search result whether or not you actually click on that site’s link. This obviously can lead to all kinds of problems … your computer will record that you visited sites that you never actually visited, you’ll download cookies that you don’t need, stats for the sites in question will be artificially inflated, etc., etc. Bad news all around.

Here’s how to disable the prefetch “feature,” which I highly recommend you do.
